DementiaSA input to the SA Law Reform Commission to the Rights of People with Disability – Project 122 – this has been revised to incorporate the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD)

Better practice for Assisted Decision Making is incorporated as well as enduring powers of attorney. Dealing more effectively with mental and cognitive capacity when it affects a person with the onset of a dementia.  More advocacy needs to be done on this.

Presentation to the National Minister of Health

Presentation to the National Minister of Health on the state of Geriatric Care and Geriatric Mental Health in South Africa as part of the team from the SA Older Persons Forum.

Admission by Minister Motsoaledi that geriatric mental health needs addressing and suggested a mental health summit.  This Summit was held on the 12 and 13th  April 2012 in Pretoria – attended by the Minister of Health, Deputy Min of Health, the Director-General of Health and other senior Dept of Health officials

Representation at the UNOEWG on ageing

Representation at the UN Open-ended Working Group (UNOEWG on Ageing) on Older Person’s in New York, August 2011.  The UN has a rigorous vetting process before DementiaSA could attend and participate in sessions. The United Nations Open-ended Working Group on Ageing has as its purpose the strengthening of and the protection of the human rights of older persons.

DementiaSA presented at three formal sessions in August 2011 resulting in comment that more African delegates need to be included in the UNOEWTG in the future.

2006
Contributions to the Older Person’s Act (13) 2006

DementiaSA provided presentations and comment through the Human Rights Council to Parliament on the protection, care and services to people with dementia, their family and community.
